چکیده

The oxygen-transporting properties of the haemolymph from the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes were investigated. The haemolymph concentrations of K, Mg^ and Ca ions, together with the concentration of L-lactate were measured in crayfish before, during and after 24 h emersion. The concentrations of K and Mg"" increased during aerial exposure and returned to pre-emersion levels during immersed recovery. Large increases in the level of circulating L-lactate and Ca were correlated with shortand long-term aerial exposure respectively. Changes in the concentrations of these ions could also be correlated with changes in haemocyanin oxygen affinity. Reimmersion and recovery returned all parameters to near control values. The effect, on haemocyanin oxygen affinity, of the Bohr shift alone was calculated and compared with the change in oxygen affinity (AP50) actually determined during aerial exposure. These data were also compared with predictions, calculated from in vitro data, for the potentiation of haemocyanin oxygen affinity by Ca and L-lactate ions in aerially exposed crayfish. The physiological significance of the regulation of haemocyanin oxygen affinity by these ions is discussed.

The Regulation of Haemocyanin Oxygen Affinity during Emersion of the Crayfish Austropotamobius Pallipes I. an in Vitro Investigation of the Interactive Effects of Calcium and L-lactate on Oxygen Affinity

The haemolymph of the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes exhibits a high affinity for oxygen (P50 = 2-7 Torr at pH7-9 and 15°C) and a modest Bohr effect (<p = —0-455). The affinity of haemolymph dialysed against a crayfish Ringer was lower with a P50 value of 6 4 Torr at the same temperature and pH. The oxygen affinity of the dialysed haemolymph can be increased markedly by increased concentrat...

Short Communication Urate Does Not Accumulate in the Haemolymph of Exercised Blue Crabs, Calunectes Sapidus

L-Lactate, the only known anaerobic end-product in decapod crustaceans (Gade, 1983), increases haemocyanin oxygen-affinity (Tnichot, 1980; Mangum, 1983; Bridges and Morris, 1986). In exercised blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, the decrease in haemocyanin oxygen-affinity induced by metabolic acidosis via the Bohr shift was substantially balanced by the opposing effect of L-lactate (Booth etal, 19...

Effect of Maintained Hypoxic Exposure on the Crayfish Orconectes Rusticus: Ii. Modulation of Haemocyanin Oxygen Affinity

Haemolymph Na+, Cl~, K+, Mg, Ca, Cu and protein levels, in vivo postbranchial acid-base status (total CO2, pH and PCOt), in vitro haemolymph buffer value, Bohr value and oxygen affinity were measured before and after a 31-week period in which control crayfish were maintained at normoxia and experimental crayfish were maintained at an ambient oxygen tension of 50-55 torr. Analysis of haemolymph ...

An automatic respirometer for determining oxygen uptake in crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet)) over periods of 3-4 days.

1. An automatic respirometer has been developed for continuous measurements over 3-4 days on 1-15 g crayfish. The sensor is a modified Mackereth oxygen electrode. Respiration is recorded on a millivolt potentiometric pen recorder during closed periods when the O2 concentration in the medium falls to a predetermined level. A solenoid-operated valve is then opened via a relay circuit energized by...
